    New to coding

    Hello,

My name is Aimee. I am currently enrolled at Davenport university and taking classes for medical coding.

My questions is, when coding a medical chart, do you always code patient medical history or only when it relates to the principle diagnosis?

I am very new to this and doing fairly well, but any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Aimee

    Hi Aimee,

We would code by the medical history when it relates to Principle Dx, but in some cases we code  by Acute Vs Chronic conditions, coz most of the conditions were inter-related with the medical history.  The basic guidelines in ICD-9 would be much helpful for you.

     Thanks
