    Medical Coder Employment Question

Hello, I am a student going to school for Medical Coding and Transcriptionist and I would like to ask a question? What would be the best medical facility to work in when you are starting out?  Example: hospital, family medical practice, dentiist office or ENT?

    Thank you,

     Tiffany Bark

    Re: Medical Coder Employment Question

    Hi Tiffany,

I suggest starting with a small rural hospital or a multi-specialty physician practice or walk-in clinic so that you can have exposure to a variety of different coding issues.  While specialization can be beneficial, it is often better to have knowledge in a variety of areas so that your opportunities won't be limited to just one area.  The key is to work with a healthcare entity that has sundry medical cases, providers, and clients to get experience with different software and hardware systems, various electronic record systems, and various insurances or payers and their billing policies.
