Like to smoke? Forget about getting hired.

Did you hear that some hospitals have announced they will no longer hire smokers? They are not saying that employees, visitors and patients may not smoke in or around the facility, but that if an individual smokes on his own time or in her own home, that person will not be hired. Is this taking role modeling too far? Or do healthcare system employees have an obligation to live a healthier -- and smoke-free -- lifestyle?

it cac be understandable not to smoke in public places but this make no sense that people smoking in home will also not be hired in hospitals this is totally idiotic of them.

well that is bad news for you but smoking in public area is an offense i think especially in hospitals as patients may not like that.

Surely in light of the fact that the NHS spend a lot of money with people who are ill from smoking this policy is not to off the wall? Im a smoker, but I realise its a dirty habbit and I would like to give up. I accept that its an idiotic passtime of no value and is ultimatly negative for me. Its equivilent to a funeral directors emplying someone who is suicidal! It just dont make sence. So I agree with the policy:)

This can quickly become a slippery slope. How are they finding out that the person is a smoker? Is this a question on the application? I am not sure, but this could be discrimination.

It seems that smokers would not get employments here after. It is something not practical and unwise. We cannot hinder their personal habits.
