    Nervous about Career change

I am a 25 year veteran in Respiratory Care with experience in high acuity areas including cardiac cath. lab. I am excited about joining the HIM community, but find recently my nervousness has increased. Being told that my experience is a huge advantage sounds good,  but  was wondering if there was anyone else out there with a similar situation that would have some input?

    Re: Nervous about Career change

I too am nervous about a career change. I am taking an online Coding and Medical Reimbursement class through Alfred State College. I was laid off from my job of 25 years which had absolutely nothing to do with the medical field. I decided that Coding would be a great career change as it was a fast growing opportunity. I too am looking for some imput as far as coding and wether or not it was a good career change. Any input would be welcome.

    Re: Nervous about Career change

    Hi Susan,

If your previous career did not involve health care at all, I do believe that getting into HIM could be nothing but a positive change for a career. I do believe you are correct in seeing the growth potential in this field, especially in the near future. As for coding only, that would have to be a personal choice, but I would not limit myself to just one area. As nervous as I am about the changes ahead, the excitement at the potential almost out weighs it all.

    Hope this helps,

    Re: Nervous about Career change

Like you, I am doing a full 360 in a career change. I work in retail sales, and trust me this is a comfort zone job for me. I have been doing this for over 16 years. I know that I don't want to retire in retail.

My daughter and nephews work in the healthcare field and I see all that they do and it dawned on me that I could do that too!

I am going in as a Medical Insurance Specialist at Baker College in Muskegon, MI and I will continue to work at my retail job until I finish my classes. I no longer have financial aid so I have to do all this out of pocket. In a nutshell, it is worth every penny!!

Study hard and persevere and don't let anyone tell you that it is impossible. I hear it all the time from where I work and they think I am nuts, no matter what I have to listen to nor the threats of losing my hours because of school, I will continue with my education. I know that I can make a difference in the healthcare field and will keep at it.

Anyone changing careers, know that it is worth it. Healthcare is one of the advancing career moves right now.

        Thank you,

    Re: Nervous about Career change

    Greetings to all,

Healthcare is an exciting field, part of the excitement is that it is not static, but dynamic and continually growing.  I wish all of you the very best in your studies and just know that it is natural to be nervous and excited about your new journey.

I also would like to suggest the following:

    • Read as many of the forum questions and input as you can, some may not appear to have anything to do with you now but you will get valuable insight from others that are at different steps on the same journey.
    • Join AHIMA - they have many up to date articles and online information.
    • Get a mentor or better yet get several mentors.
    • Start joining organizations in your area now for good networking opportunities.

The final comment is school is tough (don't let anyone tell you different), but it is so well worth it and you get more than double on your return!

From a returning student in a progression program (from RHIT to RHIA) who has been in the HIM field for 10+ years and is still excited about it.

    Re: Nervous about Career change

    Hi Freddie,

I just wanted to thank you for your encouraging post. I am taking an associate's degree program at Davenport University in HIT. I'm loving getting back into learning and using my brain again. I've worked construction for 24 years and have loved it, but its hard on the body and the economy and bad management have made it clear that I had to make a change. I thank you for your advice. I have had no connections to medical except for 2 of my friends are nurses or in health management jobs. I like the idea of being in a career where I can have continuing education that pays off, not only being enjoyable and interesting, but that it pays off financially in advancement in your career.

I will remember to follow your advice and put myself out there and not be fearful of the unknown.

    Thanks again. Kristen

    Re: Nervous about Career change

I am currently a student in the HIM program. I was recently laid off from my job. I have about 2 semesters left before I receive my Associates Degree. Although I am anticipating the future change, I am also a little nervous about it. I am more interested in the clinical aspect, but not absolutely decided on a particular focus, I have a few ideas, but nothing definitive.

Jeri, I am very impressed with your experience. At 41, I am just starting out, I wish I would have been more focused as a teen, rather than wasting all these years.

    Re: Nervous about Career change

Hello Freddy, very encouraging post. I am a new student to HIM program at Davenport University. I am very excited about the program potential career that follows. I'm in a class where the information is so intense, working full time as a manager, I'm having difficulty processing the information as needed in so little time. Joining and sharing within sites such as this one here, is part of an assignment for one of my classes. I'm glad I was given the opportunity to access the forums to share and receive insight on things that are beneficial. I will definitely read more questions and post as well. Sharing with individuals with similar backgrounds/interest can reveal a lot.

    Re: Nervous about Career change

Jeri, just like you I am currently making a career change. I am also a health care worker. I am a licensed practical nurse, but only with a few years experience. I decided that HIM looked like a rewarding career, with many opportunities for advancement.I am currently studying HIM at Davenport University. I am posting on this forum as an assignment, but however have found it to be very resourceful. I am very excited to be joining the field of HIM. I am also wondering if having any medical experience, will help land a job? Is there anything anyone can tell me about landing a job in HIM. Can anyone give shed some real life experiences from working in the field of HIM. Also, what do you find that you like best about your job in the HIM field, and what do you like least?

    Re: Nervous about Career change

    Hi Jeri ,

Having experience working in the healthcare field is a huge advantage. Many employers are looking for knowledge and experience.  I am in the healthcare field myself. I am in a medical billing and coding program at my school. I am also interested in getting into the HIm program. The more knowledge you have the better it looks on your resume.
