    Is ICD-9 worth my time?

I am currently a student in a medical coding specialist program, and we are learning ICD-9-CM but not ICD-10-CM. Is it beneficial or even necessary to learn ICD-9 when the integration of ICD-10 is just around the corner?

I would question the need for ICD-9 educations since ICD-10 has already been implemented (Oct 1, 2015).  I am in an HIM program at a university and the coding curriculum includes ICD-10 only.

    Dear Amy:

As of right now ICD-9-CM is still in use, but some offices and hospitals are slowly converting to ICD-10. I, like you, didn't learn much about ICD-10 and learned all aspects of ICD-9. To me learning ICD-9 is in fact helpful because you can compare codes, and as stated before, some places have not implemented ICD-10 completely and may be slower to implement than others. I would say yes to learn both because you never know which places have implemented one or the other and it would make it easier for you to jump into the field if you know both just in case.

Hope this helps a little bit for you and good luck!
