    Nervous about Coding

Hi I am soon to be graduate with an Associate Degree as a Medical Insurance Specialist.  I will like to get come tips for preparing for the certification exam.  I currently work in an outpatient facility with over 10 years of experience with Medical insurances but I want to do something more challenging.  What advice can be given to someone who wants to excel in the field but I don't want to continue my education any further to obtain my bachelor's degree, as I have a 2yr old at home?  I have been in school for so long working toward my Associate degree and I am tired.   I want to focus more on being mom and wife while maintaining a stable career.

    Re: Nervous about Coding

The AHIMA website offers great study guides for the coding certification exams, CCA and CCS, CCS-P as well as the RHIT credential for health information management professionals with the Associates of Applied Science in Health Information Management.  In addition, the requirements needed to sit for these exams are also listed AND the coding books that are allowed to be present when completing the exam.  My advice is to decide what exam you would like to take, purchase the study guide and then allow yourself time to review the study guide.  When you review the guide, DO NOT memorize the question.  Understand and review the answers to every question in the guide.  The question may be utilized on the exam, but worded slightly different, thus changing the answer.  Also, personalize your coding book with notes.  You can not possibly remember everything as a new coder.

    Good Luck!

    Hi Elena,

It's nice to see someone else is nervous. I'm glad you reached out and received good advice. I recently started taking classes toward a certificate in coding. I have a BS in Journalism and have been in the professional arena for 30 years. Now I want to find something I can do from home, that will allow me to be flexible. I've had some experience working in health care as a surgery scheduler which gave me experience working with codes. So I thought that might be a good direction to go. But I'm questioning whether the challenge is too great. Since you are now finishing, did you ever feel like that and if so, how did you get through it?

    Re: Nervous about Coding

Hello Elena. I am a mom of four kids, and I am working towards my second degree in healthcare. It hasn't been easy, but I have come to the conclusion that, if I take it one day and one assignment at a time, it's possible. I know it is exhausting, but if you keep on going, it will be worth it in the end. Good luck on obtaining your Bachelor's!

    Sincerely,
