• re: Passion

Our profession needs people like you. Keep sharing your enthusiasm. Once you become a laboratorian, remember to spread it beyond the walls of the lab. Here's what I tell new hospital employees: You can be the face of your department throughout the institution. Watch for interdepartmental opportunities throughout your ...
• re: Working With Other Generations

There have been many recent articles addressing differences between generations. I read that many boomers are frustrated with the general personality traits that have been assigned to Gen X, Gen Y and the Millennials. I'm a boomer. I understand the need for people who work together to know what perspectives other generations are ...

• re: How Many Managers?

Thanks for your observations about line staff and all of the non-benchwork that we do. Our supervisors rely on us for all of those things. They do truly appreciate it. I wish that our job positions and salaries were tiered (tech I, tech II) to relfect the varying degrees of our expertise in these areas.

• re: I Dream of Amoebas

I suspect your lab dreams will continue for as long as your are a laboratorian. My co-workers and I oftend dream about our lab (or some lab in a parallel universe that's supposed to be ours). It's fun to share the bizarre stories when we come in for work. I can't think of a better way to start the day than by sharing a good ...
• re: Communication

Wow! I wish I could print this and post it on the office door of every one of supervisors. There is very little group dialog where I work. I do think our individual input is valued, but to get together in small groups to discuss issues from many perspectives at once and hash out ideas rarely happens. Seems that ...

• your lab on website?

Does anyone have a well-designed Clinical Laboratory section on their organization's website that they are particularly proud of? I am interested in seeing what other labs have done to reach out to patients/the community via the web. The standard ''about us'' seems to vary in quality and quantity of information from lab to lab. Does anyone have ...

• re: Go for the Parents

Wow! Targeting parents is food for thought but not very easy for me to digest. Sure the armed forces need to recruit. Trying to convince skeptical parents that its OK for their young adults to join the armed forces is one thing. But to think that, in general, parents have that much sway over their childrens lives, or more ...
• re: New Supervisor Marches to a Different Beat

I wonder how this supervisor was hired in the first place? Assuming that the lab manager was involved in the hiring process, there should have been an indepth exploration of the supervisor's management style/philosophy during the job interview. I'm sad for all of the good techs who were caught in the vortex of such incompetence.
• re: Words Have Power, Choose Them Wisely

Bravo, Mr. McDaniel. The art of answering questions is a skill that can take years to hone. When I am orienting new employees it's a subject that I always address. When faced with a question to which one does not know the answer there are a few tricks that will keep the caller satisfied, at least for the short term, and give them a ...
