• re: Don't Hate Your Job

For a long time (about five years), I really hated my job. In all, I worked for the organization for eleven years. I tried different areas of the lab, different hospital sizes main facility) vs critical access), but the problems that I had were with administration and how the "management" treated the "workers". ...

  • Re: Union?

I think it would be a good idea to present a united front to management. I don't know if a union would ever catch on in the South, though. Another option would be to consolidate all the various ''registries'' that certify laboratory professionals.

  • Re: Do you have 7-on/7off?

Our main hospital in Bryan uses 7on/7off throughout all shifts, with only a few ''technical specialists'' as 5 day a week workers. The management allows two people to change a shift, with one person working Monday-Thursday and the second person working Friday,Saturday and Sunday for as long as they both agree to it. (We only have two ...

  • Re: A college student wondering about Med. Tech

It's not a bad career overall, but be careful not to be trapped in Medical Technology. A lot of people get into the field because they can't afford or qualify for something else (MD, Pharmacy, nursing, etc). If you don't want a career in Laboratory Medicine, have definite timelines to get out or else life will get in the ...

  • Re: What other tests are there besides Waived tests?

There are moderately complex and highly complex tests that require a Medical Technologist. These are usually in Blood Bank or Microbiology, two areas that require further training and experience. Unfortunately, the waived testing represents a ''Lab for Dummies'' attitude that is becoming more and more prevelant in the ...

  • Re: ED hemolyzed samples

Our latest ''solution'' is to assign the phlebotomists to a position in the ER... don't think that will help too much, but at least it's worth a try. In a smaller facility, the lab works directly with the ER staff and can actually make changes for the benefit of the patient.

  • Re: Overworked and Sleepy

I work nights by choice to get away from some of the administrative BS on dayshift. I find that my busiest time is at the end of my shift, from 5:30 to 7am. I find that I have to be VERY careful to match the requisition with the correct patient and to really concentrate to avoid errors. Not the best solution, but the only one that I ...
